After years of driving, you may notice non-stop body shake, a trembling steering wheel or strange noises while moving. Many blame the engine, but the real culprit is often the engine mount. Hidden from view, this small part is critical; once it ages or breaks, its vibration spreads through the whole car, spoiling comfort and shortening the life of nearby components.
What does an engine mount do?
An engine mount sits between the engine and the chassis rails. Its rubber body absorbs and dampens the shocks and vibrations produced by the engine.

When the engine vibrates, the mount soaks up the energy, cutting the amount that reaches the cabin, reducing noise and harshness. At the same time it keeps the power-train securely positioned, preventing premature failure of engine and transmission parts.

How to tell if an engine mount is bad?
1. Visual check
Look for cracks, splits, bulges or missing pieces of rubber. Any visible damage means the mount has lost most of its cushioning ability.
2. Fluid leaks
Some mounts are liquid-filled. If you see oily stains or wetness around the mount, the seal has failed and the mount must be replaced before the shaking gets worse.

3. Vibration & noise
If the engine feels rough, especially at idle or under acceleration, and you hear unusual clunks or rattles, suspect the mounts.
When should engine mounts be replaced?
The rubber gradually hardens and cracks under heat, load and oil exposure. A 5-year interval is a good rule of thumb, but hard driving or rough roads will shorten that life. Most cars use three or four mounts; if one has failed, replace the set at the same time to keep damping equal and maintain ride comfort and stability.

A tiny engine mount has a big influence on smooth, quiet driving.
Inspect and renew them on schedule to cut vibration and noise—and to protect the engine and everything around it.
